MODULE 4.1 - FIGMA Overview

Figma Overview & Basic Shapes

In this lesson, Josh Pomeroy will introduce us to Figma a design and layout program, that uses vector graphics.

HOW TO

 

Gradient Fill

  • Create Frame (1080×1080 – Instagram Square)

  • Create 3 Vertical Rectangles

  • Change fill type for the first Rectangle to Linear Fill

  • Choose colors from palette (first swatch/stop and second swatch/stop)

 

Pattern Fill

  • Change fill type of second rectangle to Image

  • Choose Pattern under the second drop-down menu

  • Select Choose Image… and use one of the provided pattern assets

  • Make sure the sizing is set to 100%

 

Image Fill

  • Change fill type of third rectangle to Image

  • Choose Fill under the second drop-down menu (Default)

  • Select Choose Image… and use one of the provided photo assets

These are the instructions for THIS lesson.  Before you complete an assignment you first need to follow along with the lesson.

Properties

In this lesson, you will learn how to modify fill properties in Figma.  Including the gradient, pattern, and image fill options, as well as Blend Modes.

HOW TO

 

Gradient Fill

  • Create Frame (1080×1080 – Instagram Square)

ASSIGNMENT #1

Just like the first lesson, I want you to take a screenshot of your work.  Make sure you everything FITS on the screen and hide the UI. Please refer to the HOW TO on the left side of your screen if you are lost.

So, you will need:

  • Save a local copy (.FIG)
  • Save Screenshot and make sure you us the naming convention LastFirstShapeFillScreenshot
  • Upload to classroom

This assignment will consist of two .FIG files for you to work on.  But, you will submit both of them at the same time in Google Classroom.

4.4a Village Academy

We are starting a new school called Village Academy and we need a student ID card.  I have included the images you will use and it is up to you to design an ID Card on your own.  

  • Watch the videos below for how to setup your document
  • Your card CANNOT resemble the student card that you made with Josh.
  • You may use your own photo if you wish, or the photos included in the downloads.
  • Choose your own school colors – however if using an included mascot – you must use a palette that works with the mascot colors.  (more in video below)
  • Use a texture of some sort on your design
  • Have FUN

4.8 Figma Effects

What we are working towards something bigger that will come in the second nine weeks.  Right now we are learning the fundamentals of Figma.  So, you need to practice fundamental skills.

For this assignment, I want you to do the following:

  1. Be sure to take a screenshot of your practice with Josh


THEN you will:

  1. Create a new Figma document/file
  2. Have TWO frames using the instagram layout (as usual)
  3. Frame #1 should be for shapes while Frame #2 should be for Text
  4. On the “shapes” frame, I want you to use to demonstrate practice of using and stacking effects.  It can be similar to what Josh did or something on your own but you have to practice.
  5. On the “text” frame, I want you to do the same thing but with text.  Why type of effects can you create with text.
  6. You should have at least five demonstrations of practice on EACH frame.
